Hoarseness
Definition:
Having a hoarse voice, rough or harsh in sound.

Common causes of hoarseness:
- Laryngitis deu to:
- Excessive use of the voice (as in shouting or singing)
- Allergies
- Inhaling irritating substances
- Excessive use of alcohol or tobacco
- Coughing

- Viral or Bacterial infections
- Gastric reflux (Reflux Laryngitis)
- Sinus Infection
- Vocal cord paralysis (e.g. head and neck surgery)
- Tuberculosis
- Tonsillitis
- Ingestion of a caustic liquid
- Foreign body in the esophagus or trachea ( especially in children)
- Puberty
- Postnasal drip
- Heavy smoking and drinking, especially in combination
- Infectious mononucleosis
Other Causes of hoarseness:
- Bronchoscopy or other tests (temporary)
- Syphilis In Women
- Larynx Cancer
- Cancer metastasis to the larynx
- Vocal cord nodules or paralysis (post-surgical)
- After breathing tube for ventilator is removed
- Bronchoscopy or other tests (temporary)
- Cancer of the voice box (laryngeal cancer)
- Overall weakness caused by other diseases
- Myopathies
- Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA):
- A chronic autoimmune disease marked especially by pain, stiffness, inflammation, swelling, and sometimes destruction of joints;called also atrophic arthritis.
- Sjogren’s Syndrome (Sicca syndrome):
- A chronic autoimmune disease in which white blood cells attack the moisture-producing glands. The hallmark symptoms are dry eyes and dry mouth, but it is a systemic disease, affecting many organs and may cause fatigue.
Call your doctor if hoarseness is accompanied by:
- Difficulty in breathing or swallowing
- Drooling, especially in a small child
- In a child less than 3 months old
- Hoarseness has lasted for more than 1 week in a child
- Hoarseness has lasted for more than 2 week in an adult
Diagnostic tests that may be performed include:
- Blood tests such as CBC or blood differential
- Throat examination with small mirror
- X-rays of the neck
- Laryngoscopy (visualization of the larynx with a laryngoscope)
- Throat culture
